What a season of Oklahoma weather does to a fence line
Edmond gets three kinds of weather a fence has to survive: the spring line of storms that comes across from the west with hail in it, the straight wind behind the front, and then two months of heat that pulls moisture out of red clay until the ground opens up. Each one damages a fence differently, and each one leaves a different thing to look for.
Hail hits panels flat on. Wind works on the connections. Dry clay works on whatever is buried. A fence that shrugs off one of those can still be quietly failing from another, which is why a walk of the fence line should look at more than the side facing the weather.
Walking the line after the front passes
Wait until the ground firms up. Crossing a soaked clay yard tears up turf and tells you nothing extra. Once the yard holds a boot print without turning to slick paste, start at a corner post and work in one direction so nothing gets skipped.
- Push on every post at chest height. A post that rocks in wet soil may be sound once things dry, so note it and check again.
- Sight along the top rail from one end. A run reads level or it does not, and sag shows up faster in a sight line than in any measurement.
- Check hardware for backed-out screws and stretched holes, especially on the leeward side, where wind pulls rather than pushes.
- Look at the base of the panels for splash staining and washed soil, which is where clay movement announces itself first.
What is urgent and what can wait
A post leaning over a gas meter, or a flattened section between a pool and a street, is same-day work. A dented cap, a rattling picket, a run that shifted an inch: those keep. Sorting the list this way is what stops a repair from turning into a replacement at the worst time of year, when every crew in the county is booked out three weeks deep.

Chain Link Tension and Sagging Mesh
Slack fabric is a symptom, not the fault
When mesh starts to belly out between posts, the instinct is to grab the fabric and pull harder. That almost never lasts. A chain link fence holds its shape through a chain of parts: terminal posts resist the pull, the top rail keeps the line straight, tension bars carry load from the fabric edge into the bands, and the fabric itself only needs to be snug. Work out which link in that chain gave up, then repair that part.
Begin at the terminal posts
End, corner and gate posts carry everything. In local clay, a terminal set too shallow, or set in a hole augered while the ground was dry and then backfilled loose, will lean a degree or two toward the pull. Two degrees over a six foot post is more than an inch of slack across the run, which is plenty to notice. Put a level on the post before touching anything woven.
Line posts carry no tension at all. If a line post leans while both terminals stand plumb, the cause is soil, a vehicle or a tree root, and the loose mesh is a downstream effect.
Then the top rail
Rail sections telescope into one another. Years of wind work the sleeves apart a quarter inch at a time until a joint opens. Sight down the rail from a corner. A wave in the rail puts a matching wave in the fabric. Rails also bow after a limb lands on them, and no amount of tightening below will straighten a bowed rail.
Retensioning that holds
Fabric attaches at each terminal through a bar woven vertically down the last row of diamonds and clamped by bands. Slack usually traces back to bands that slipped, or to a bar woven through too few diamonds when the fence went up.
- Release the bands at one terminal only. Working both ends together throws away your reference point.
- Pull with a come-along against a pull bar so the load spreads over the full height, never with a single hook caught in one diamond.
- Draw the diamonds in by about an inch across a normal run and stop there. Overtensioned fabric distorts and starts dragging the terminals inward.
- Retighten bands from top to bottom, then re-tie the fabric to the top rail roughly every two feet.
The seasonal wobble
Galvanized fabric moves with temperature. A run set tight on a hundred degree afternoon feels drum hard in January, and one set during a cold snap looks lazy by July. Tension in mild weather if the choice exists, and ignore small seasonal change. The question worth acting on is whether the sag is present in both seasons.
One more thing worth checking while the tools are out: the bottom tension wire. Many runs never had one, and without it the fabric can be lifted by a dog or pushed out by mowing debris until the lower diamonds deform permanently. A wire threaded through the bottom row and tightened at each terminal costs little and takes most of that abuse.
Emergency Fence Repairs in the First Hours After a Storm
Decide first whether it is safe to walk out there
A flattened fence section is rarely the only thing that came down. Before anyone crosses the yard, look up and look for wire. A service drop pulled away from a house, a neighbour's line resting on a metal top rail, or a transformer sitting dark while the rest of the block has power are all reasons to stop where you are. Metal conducts, and a chain link run can be live a long way from wherever the contact happened.
The second consideration is the dog. To an animal, a gap in the fence is an open gate, and the hours right after severe weather are when pets go missing. If containment is broken, solve that before anything cosmetic gets attention.
Stabilise, do not rebuild
Temporary work on day one has a single purpose: keep the damage from spreading until the ground dries out and a real repair becomes possible.
- Brace a leaning post with two lengths of scrap lumber staked into firm ground at an angle, one either side of the lean.
- Leave a blown-over section flat and weighted rather than standing it back up loosely, where the next gust turns it into a sail again.
- Fasten flapping boards back with screws instead of nails, since screws come out cleanly when the proper repair happens.
- Close an opening with temporary mesh staked on both sides of the gap, never tied to the damaged run itself.
Saturated clay is why waiting pays
Resetting a post in soaked red clay is wasted effort. The soil carries almost no bearing load while it is wet, fresh concrete poured against a wet clay wall will not bond to it, and the hole itself keeps slumping closed. Give it several dry days. The exception is a post pulled completely free, which is worth removing so the hole can be covered, because an open post hole is a hazard by itself.
Photograph before clearing
Get pictures before a single board moves, and include the debris that did the damage. A limb lying across a crushed section is the evidence for how that section was crushed, and once the limb is on the curb the fence just looks like it fell over on its own. Take wide shots first, then close ones, then one frame that includes the house or another landmark so nobody can question where it was taken.
Hang on to receipts for tarps, stakes and any rented equipment used during the temporary work, along with the dates. That paperwork is worth as much as the photographs when someone later asks what was spent and when.

Vinyl does not dent, it whitens and splits
Steel dents and wood bruises. PVC does something else. A vinyl panel takes a hail strike by flexing, and when the impact goes past what the material will absorb, the flex leaves a stress mark behind: a pale spot, sometimes a small star pattern, sometimes a hairline that only appears when the sun is low. Cold vinyl is more brittle than warm vinyl, so a March storm at forty degrees will do more visible harm than a June storm throwing the same size stones.
Reading the panel face
Stand where the light rakes across the surface instead of hitting it square. Early morning or the last hour of daylight works best, and damage invisible at noon can show as a shadow at seven. Run a fingertip across any pale area. If the surface is smooth and only the colour changed, the panel is stressed but whole. If there is a lip or a split under your finger, that section is taking water into the wall of the extrusion, and freeze cycles will open it further.
Treat the top rail as its own inspection. Rails catch stones at a shallower angle and tend to show a line of small crazed marks rather than one obvious hit.
Where the damage hides
- Post caps, which sit horizontal and take the full vertical strike. A cracked cap sends water straight down the inside of a hollow post.
- The routed openings where rails pass through posts. An impact beside a routed hole starts a tear from an edge that was already cut.
- North and east faces, skipped because the storm came out of the southwest. Stones bounce off everything.
Repair runs post to post
Vinyl systems are assembled rather than fastened the way lumber is, so swapping one picket usually means unlocking a rail, and unlocking a rail means loosening the run. Plan the work between two posts. On an older fence the real obstacle is colour: white weathers, tan fades, and a factory-fresh replacement beside eight summers of Oklahoma sun reads as a patch from the street. Some of that difference evens out over a season. Some of it never does.
Keep the offcuts from the original build. A short length of matching rail from the day the fence went up is worth more than a catalogue match five years later, because extrusion profiles change without announcement.
Record it while the marks are fresh
Photograph damage next to something for scale, a tape or a coin, and shoot the whole run as well as the close work. Write down the date the storm came through. Claims turn on whether marks are recent and whether weather caused them rather than a mower or a ladder, and a faint stress mark on white vinyl is very hard to argue about six months later.
